Annually, the “World Ice Art Championships” are staged in Fairbanks, Alaska. Ice carving teams come from around the world to create large, intricate ice sculptures from crystal-clear 4′ x 4′ x 6′ blocks of ice harvested from ponds that grew as gravel pits filled with ground water and froze during the winter. The ice blocks are stacked up for the carving teams to enable them to create their sculptures according to drawings they usually prepared before arriving in Fairbanks. These teams carve for about a week, light their own sculptures and get judged. The ice carving park provides a visual extravaganza for the thousands of visitors who come each year to view these hundred or so gorgeous ice creations, some of which end up over twenty feet tall. As spectacular as each entire individual sculpture is, I became intrigued with small portions of two or more sculptures shot at the same time in one photo or the abstract patterns of colored lights bouncing around within a single sculpture. And that’s what all my “Iced Light” fine-art photographs are about. Enjoy.
