About The Image
The Matanuska Valley in Alaska is a productive farming area near Palmer. During the 1930’s, farmers mainly from Minnesota, Michigan and Wisconsin were offered 40 acre homesteads if they would move to Alaska. They could have their new homesteads free and clear if they stayed 5 years. Some did and many found the conditions too harsh and left. This image depicts one of the landmark beautiful original barns set in front of Pioneer Peak that I made with a Pentax 6×7cm camera and Pentax 300mm lens on Ektachrome film.
